Every rose has its thorn.
= No rose without a thorn.
（とげのないバラはない）
■ thorn 「植物のとげ」

Example is better than precept.
（実例は教訓にまさる）
■ precept 「道徳的な教え」「教訓」

Experience is the best teacher.
（経験は最善の教師である）

Faint heart never won fair lady.
（弱気で美人を得たためしはない）
■ ここでの faint は「臆病な」、fair は女性をさして「うるわしの」「美しき」の意。

Familiarity breeds contempt.
（親しくなりすぎると相手に対して侮りが生まれる）
■ ここでの breed は「好ましくない状況を生む」の意。

Finders keepers(, losers weepers).
（見つけた人がもらう人（、なくした人は泣きをみる）；見つけた者勝ち）
■ finders, losers のあとにそれぞれ are が省略されている。

First impressions are the most lasting.
（第一印象が最も長持ちする）
■ lasting 「長く続く」「永久の」

Forbidden fruit is sweetest.
（禁断の木の実が最も甘い）

Give a thief enough rope and he'll hang himself.
（勝手にさせておけば泥棒は自然に身を滅ぼすものだ）
■ give somebody enough rope 「人にしたい放題させる」、hang oneself 「首つり自殺をする」

Give him an inch and he'll take a mile [yard].
（1インチ与えると1マイル[ヤード]とろうとする；少し親切にするとすぐつけあがる）

God [Heaven] helps those who help themselves.
（神[天]はみずから助くる者を助く）

Grasp all, lose all.
（すべてをつかもうとすればすべてを失う；欲ばりのまる損）
